Our Region
Southwest Florida consists of six counties: Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee and Sarasota, with a total area of 6,663 square miles and a land area of 5,986 square miles. Four of the six counties border the Gulf of Mexico. Consequently, the region has a coastal orientation, with population and economic activity concentrated in coastal urban areas. It is one of the most attractive regions in the State of Florida and in the nation, primarily because of the abundance of natural resources. See Map of Southwest Florida.

Our People
The regional beaches, an average temperature of 75 degrees per year, sub-tropical vegetation and a wealth of biologically diverse wildlife species draw millions of people from around the U.S. and the world. In addition, retirees are attracted to the region because of the excellent health care systems. Reasonably priced housing throughout the region also makes it a great place for families.

The attributes of Southwest Florida appeal to people of many ages and backgrounds. The age cohort 35-64 makes up the largest share of our population and is estimated to grow on average 2.0% per year. The abundance of people in this age group makes for a healthy workforce. The fastest growing population, residents age 65 and older—estimated to grow at an average rate of 5.0% per year—brings a wide range of knowledge and experience to Southwest Florida. The age cohort 18 to 34 is the second fastest growing population with an expected average annual growth rate of 3.0%. This age group is a vital part of the region’s future.



According to the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR), the Southwest Florida population grew by 29.0% from 1,206,635 in 2000 to 1,552,350 in 2007. The region’s population is projected to continue growing at an average annual rate of 2.6% reaching 2,396,793 people in 2030.

Southwest Florida boasts a well educated and highly skilled workforce. According to the 2000 Census, 23% of Southwest Floridians age 25 and over had a college degree or higher compared to 24% in the nation. The Southwest Florida Region has over six Colleges and Universities which provide quality education to our youth (and all citizens), as well as people across the Country, and international students around the world. These institutions of higher learning are an indispensable part of our regional identity.
