Comprehensive Plans assist the region’s citizens to address the future by identifying existing conditions of each local jurisdiction in the region, projecting where areas will grow and what they will need to accommodate the expected growth, analyze the known alternatives and select the best alternative that will provide a rational path to meet community needs and lead local jurisdictions to a desired end, which will protect the area’s environment, while providing for the needs of man.
With the increase in population that is currently on-going in the region and the growing rate that technology is advancing world wide, it is extremely difficult to identify exactly how any City or County in the region will look in the year 2020. However, Comprehensive Plans help provide a forum for the region’s citizens to identify and address the many diverse views of the future. Comprehensive Plans describe the visions and goals in various functional elements that are important to local governments and identify the importance of each. The resulting guiding document, if appropriately implemented and monitored, will provide for future growth during 20-year planning horizons.
It should be noted that all Comprehensive Plans produced by local governments in the region must be determined to be consistent with the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council Strategic Regional Policy Plan and the State of Florida Comprehensive Plan. If these plans are done properly, the result will provide for a better natural and built environment for the community and a place where the health, safety and welfare of the region’s citizens are maximized.
